The Wildcats (0-2) fell 59-53 to Crane in the Pierce City Invitational, and The Lady Wildcats (0-1) lost 49-13 to Lockwood in the Diamond Tournament.
Against Crane, the much smaller Wildcats trailed by as many as 18 points (30-12) in the first half and were behind 33-18 at halftime.
"We got better tonight," said Verona coach Brad Stewart. "I really felt we outplayed Crane for three quarters. We dug ourselves into a hole that we couldn't get out.
The Wildcats outhustled the Pirates to every loose ball in the third and fourth quarter and sealed off easy layups that Crane used in the first two quarters to build a lead.
Ascencion Estrada's 3-pointer with 19 seconds left in the third trimmed the Pirates lead to four at 39-35 but Crane drilled a trey at the buzzer to extend the advantage to 42-35.
The Pirates opened the fourth quarter with a 8-0 run to lead 50-35 and looked to be headed to an easy victory.
However, the scrappy Wildcats countered with a 13-3 run to trim the lead to 53-48 with 1:35 remaining.
Verona closed the gap to 57-53 with 35 ticks left but couldn't get any closer.
Jordan Bowling led the Pirates with 26 points, and Zach Chastain finished with 12 points.
Seth Losack led Verona with 18 points. Ascencion Estrada finished with 14 points. Tomas Estrada recorded 11 points. Brent Downs added 5 points. Dalton Miller and Justin Smith chipped in 2 points each, and Larry Patterson tallied 1 point.
The Wildcats will face East Newton on Nov. 30 in the consolation semifinal at Pierce City. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
In the first round of the Diamond Tournament, Lockwood secured a 49-13 win over Verona.
The Lady Wildcats fell behind early and couldn't get on track trailing 18-6 after the first quarter and 28-9 at halftime.
Verona was outscored 15-4 in the third period to trail 43-13 heading into the final frame.
"Lockwood worked harder and executed better than we did," said Verona coach Ryan Yates. "We are a young team and everyone's roles have changed. The sooner we can adjust to these changes, the sooner we can be in the win column."
Madison Coones led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 22 points. Olivia Finley added 11 points.
Shelby Barsotti and Jessica Youngberg paced Verona with 4 points each. Hannah Hilton and Taylor Pinkly recorded 2 points apiece and Tessa Bilyeu finished with 1 point.
The Lady Wildcats will play College Heights in the consolation semifinal at Diamond on Nov. 30. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
