Retired Master Sgt. Harold Robert Courtney, Sr., age 71, of Mt. Vernon, Mo., formerly of Monett, passed away at 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at the Mt. Vernon Place Care Center. He was born on Feb. 9, 1941, in Old English, Iowa, the son of Roscoe and Caroyl (King) Courtney.

Harold was a 1959 graduate of Independence High School and graduated from college at Garden City. He retired on Oct. 31, 1983 from the Air Force after serving 20 years.

He served in Vietnam and received the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He also received several commendation medals during his term including Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Outstanding Unit Award, and Good Conduct Medals to name a few.

After retirement he resided in Purdy and later in Monett. He worked at EFCO Window Manufacturing and the RM Machine Shop in Purdy. Harold bowled in leagues in Monett and was a member of the Monett VFW.

On June 17, 1972, he married Mary Gale in New Jersey. She preceded him in death in March of 1990. His parents and brother-in-law, Gail Barber, also preceded him in death.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his two children, Denise Rounds and her significant other, James Case, of Mt. Vernon, and Harold "Howie" Courtney, Jr. and his wife, Johnnie, of Aurora; two brothers, Dean Courtney and his wife, Peggy, of Hollister, and John Courtney and his wife, Nancy, of Springfield; one sister, Sally Barber of Hollis, Okla.; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service, under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt.

Vernon, will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
