Barry County Council on Aging offers help to elderly

Friday, November 16, 2012

The Barry County Council on Aging (BCCOA), funded by the Barry County Senior Service Tax Fund, offers a variety of services to assist senior citizens in maintaining their independent lifestyles.

Homework Service provides basic housekeeping chores for those unable to manage such tasks. The service provides the opportunity for senior citizens to remain in their homes instead of having to make other living arrangements.

The Good Neighbor Transportation Service has volunteer drivers to fill gaps when no other services are available. Volunteers often transport riders to and from appointments. Clients must not be wheelchair bound.

The Respite/Caregiver Relief Program is personalized to an individual's needs. In this program, caregivers socialize and prepare meals for their elderly clients. This allows the primary caregiver to leave home occasionally, providing much needed time for personal business or quiet time. This program is in high demand, so funding for the service is limited.

The Personal Care Program assists seniors with any two or more daily living skills such as eating, dressing, bathing or walking. These services are contracted out to a professional provider.

The medical alert program is now available through BCCOA. The service provides for installation of a medical alert system at an affordable cost, allowing for 24-hour, seven-day-a-week access to emergency services at the touch of a button. A telephone line is required for this service.

The agency also provides funds for volunteer drivers to deliver nutritional meals to homebound seniors. Meals are prepared and packaged at one of three senior centers, which are located in Cassville, Shell Knob and Monett. Volunteer drivers are reimbursed for mileage for home meal deliveries.

"These services are valuable for our Barry County seniors," said Sue Horn, BCCOA board member.

The board's goal is to secure solutions to the in-home needs of senior citizens, helping them remain in their own homes as long as practical.
