Raymond E. Hess, age 88, of Monett, Mo., passed from this life on Tuesday evening, Nov. 13, 2012 while at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo. Raymond was born on April 26, 1924 in Peabody, Kan., the son of Harry D. Hess and Olga A. (Zieh) Hess.
Following his school years and graduation from Burns High School in Burns, Kan., Raymond enlisted in the United States Army in 1943. He served his country honorably overseas and was discharged in 1945, being awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Raymond was an avid photographer, taking pictures of nature, eagles and his family. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening and the opportunity to help others. He was a member and former Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Monett. Raymond retired in 1986 from the Gas Service Company in Monett.
On Feb. 16, 1947 in El Dorado, Kan., Raymond and Ruby Lee Wallace were united in marriage. They were blessed with over 65 years together. She survives. Additional survivors include two sons, Martin Hess, and wife, Sara, of Bartlesville, Okla. and Richard Hess, and wife, Nancy, of Platte City, Mo.; two daughters, Janet McBride, and husband, Ralph, of Joplin, Mo. and Mary Mitchell, and husband, Mark, of Baton Rouge, La.; one brother, John Wesley Hess, of Kechi, Kan. and one sister, Esther Stucky, of Peabody, Kan.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Olga Hess; five brothers; and one sister.
Funeral services for Mr. Hess will be held at 1p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Monett. Dr. Bill Cox will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be at the Monett I.O.O.F. Cemetery following the service.
