Monett has seven named to All-District team

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

The Monett Cubs soccer team had seven players named to the Class 1, All-District 12 team.

Eddie Aceves, Jorge Aceves, Luis Gonzales and Jario Rueda received first team awards.

Misael Cordero, Francisco Morales and Will Snider were second team honorees.

Aceves, a junior, scored 19 goals for the Cubs this season.

"Eddie is a huge weapon for our team. He has excellent ball handling, speed and is very dangerous on the left wing," said Monett coach Dan Janssen. "He can score goals and make plays. He started out the year playing forward for his goal scoring ability but ended up in the midfield just because he created a lot of problems for the other teams."

Jorge Aceves, a senior, helped anchor the Monett defense.

"Jorge worked his tail off to get stronger and faster this year," said Janssen. "He was our lone returning defensive player from last year and he knew he would have to step up and play sweeper this season. He was the heart of our defense and the vocal leader of the team. He never quit on a play and was my most reliable defender."

Gonzales, a senior midfielder used his skill and hustle to help Monett in the midfield.

"To me, Luis was my most valuable soccer player," said Janssen. "Though it doesn't show in the stat book, his play has been invaluable to us this year. He plays a physical game and always makes the right pass or play. He seems to be in the right spot at the right time and led the game winning drive in the district championship by refusing to let the ball get back to Cassville's side of the field."

Rueda, a sophomore, led the Cubs in goals this year with 21. He was the first Monett player to have more than 20 goals since 2009.

"Jairo is one of those players that is very dangerous and versatile," said Janssen. "He can play both inside and outside midfielder and is a dangerous goal scorer as a forward. If I needed a player for a spot, I knew I could count on him. Jairo has a high soccer IQ and knows how to get himself in the right spot to make a play on the ball both offensively and defensively."

Cordero, a senior, had a big second half of the season for the Cubs. "We switched Misael from midfield to forward and he quickly became a good finisher for us," said Janssen. "He put away a lot of shots. His play helped us open up the field with some width by sending a lot of cross passes in the box."

Morales, a four-year stater for the Cubs, scored eight goals and had nine assists for Monett this season.

"Francisco is another player who switched to midfield this year because he was so good at the position," said Janssen. "He is one of our most consistent players. You know exactly what you will get with Francisco on the field: a lot of hustle and unselfish play."

Snider, a senior, was the third piece of a talented defensive wall for the Cubs.

"Will had the flexibility and smarts to play a lot of different positions for us," said Janssen. "He came in last year and was a real servant-leader that set the tone for the team and has continued in that role once again. He brings a solid set of soccer skills, a lot of character and hustle when he plays."
