Mt. Vernon Community Theatre will host its first Broadway Sing-Along and Karaoke Night at Keen Bean, located at 1031 S. Market St. in Mt. Vernon, on Friday, Nov. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Mt. Vernon Community Theatre is a new theatre organization dedicated to producing quality plays, offering educational opportunities, and serving Mt. Vernon and the surrounding area.
"MVCT emerged from the experience of doing 'The Music Man' this summer," said Matt Teel, president of the MVCT Board. "The show had a tremendous energy and brought together people from different organizations in town, as well as some who had never been involved in theatre before. We wanted to find a way to build on that partnership, and harness the talent of people who wish to do more projects together."
Much of that talent is musical talent, including people who like to get together and sing.
"People who love theatre are constantly quoting lines from plays and singing songs together," said Teel. "This sing-along and karaoke night is a chance to have a little something to eat or drink and sing some of our favorite songs, maybe do a little solo performing. We have no shortage of performers in this area, so I'm sure we'll have a great time."
The occasion will also offer the organization a chance to reach out to the public and enlist additional participation. Teel said no commitment is needed to sing or to participate in the organization's workshops, service projects or plays.
