The Monett Lady Cubs volleyball team (3-21) fell 25-10, 25-17 to the East Newton Lady Patriots (15-9-1) on Oct. 22 in the Class 3, District 11 tournament.

"We didn't get the outcome we wanted tonight," said Monett coach Crystal Shannon. "I think we came out and responded in the second set. We just came up short."

Monett got off to a slow start against the Lady Patriots falling behind 10-2.

The lead ballooned to 19-5 before a 4-0 Lady Cubs' run narrowed the gap to 19-9.

East Newton held on to win 25-10.

"We let them get too far out ahead," said Shannon. "I felt we picked up our intensity but we couldn't overcome the deficit."

The second match was much tighter.

Monett started strong tying the score at 2-2, 6-6, 7-7, 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11.

The Lady Patriots then responded with a 7-0 run to lead 18-11. The Lady Cubs countered with a 5-0 run to trim the margin to 18-16 but could get no closer falling 25-17.

"Even though the season is over, I am excited for our team's future," said Shannon. "The key for us this off-season is to keep playing sports and stay active."
