A 'scrap' from the past

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Readers of The Good Old Days, a regular feature in the print edition of The Monett Times, have been reading about the massive scrap metal drive promoted by the Monett Times.

The photo above, provided by Jo Ann Thomas, shows that pile of scrap metal collected at Third and Broadway. Thomas' father, Ed Jones, the founder of Ed Jones Garage and Wrecker Service, coordinated the city's earlier scrap metal drive and helped get the material to reprocessing plants to be converted into war material.

The sign on the building at right advertises the Dailey Brothers Circus, which visited Monett on Oct. 17, 1942.

The pile of scrap was estimated at close to 1 million pounds.
