Trunk or Treat offers fun for all

Friday, October 19, 2012

Monett area churches and the YMCA will be hosting the fourth annual "Trunk or Treat" from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the parking lot of First United Methodist Church of Monett, located at 1600 N. Central.

The entire event is free to children and their parents and depends entirely upon donations.

There is no age limit. The theme for trunks and costumes should be "family friendly." Decorating can be done on trunks of cars, pickups, vans and buses.

Children go from trunk to trunk for their treats, and in between the trunks, inflatable toys provided by the YMCA will be set up to provide more fun. Also on site will be games, a hayride, a camp site for cooking S'mores and another camp site for storytelling.

Other activities will include a trunk decorating competition. Drawings will take place every 10 minutes for door prizes.

"We want to offer families a fun way to celebrate Halloween," said Charlene Dart, associate pastor at First United Methodist Church of Monett.

Last year, there were approximately 4,000 in attendance.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held inside the church.

In addition to participating churches, Trunk-or-Treat is supported by the Monett YMCA, Monett Police Department, Barry-Lawrence County Ambulance District, Monett Fire Department and Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA).

Donations of candy are accepted and can be dropped off at the Methodist Church or at the YMCA.

First Christian Church of Monett will be having its "Trunk or Treat" at their location on Fourth Street. More activities will be available this year with hot dogs offered to the first 400 people. In addition to the sweet treats handed out from participating groups, there will be a hayride. Those events will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween night.
