McCullah-Wasson family holds 122nd reunion

Friday, October 19, 2012

The 122nd annual McCullah-Wasson family reunion was held Aug. 5 through Aug. 12 at the Finley River, near Hawkins Bridge, located five miles south of Nixa. Guests stayed on a two and a half acre campsite that has been in continual use for 104 years, since 1908, on a portion of the Hawkins farm.

The first reunion was a surprise birthday party for Samuel Calvin McCullah, the son of Alexander and Lucy Robertson McCullah. It was held at Samuel's home on July 1, 1890, north of Marionville, in observation of his 52nd birthday. Annual reunions have continued since that time.

This year, 174 relatives and 27 visitors attended the event, representing six states: Arkansas, California, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

Festivities included card games, a crafts auction and a side dish contest. Winners of the contest were Annette Wasson, of Nixa, first place; Hattie Carter, of Nixa, second place; and Betty McCullah, of Springfield, third place. Winners of the second annual dessert contest were: Katy St. George, of Springfield, first place; Becky Hartmayer, of Springfield, second place; and Jane Staiger, of Billings, third place.

Nick St. George, reunion committee president, conducted the business meeting, which included plans for the 125th annual reunion set for Aug. 2 through Aug. 9, 2015. Officers for the year are: Garrett Rhodes, of Highlandville, president; Callie Linville, of Nixa, vice president; Rick Haege, of Springfield, treasurer; and Jane Staiger, of Billings, secretary.

The oldest family members attending this year's event was George Hawkins. The youngest member was two-week-old Marilyn Scholz, daughter of Andy and Laine Scholz, and granddaughter of John and Cynthia Scholz, all of Springfield.

A memorial service was held for family members who died during the previous year. They included: Carolyn Jane O'Neal, Nellie Jo Wiles Reynolds, C. Roland Earsom, Cleva Hawkins, Harriet Coley Gahr and June Doran Baker. The message was based on I Corinthians concerning love and family. David Anderson led the group in singing "God Be with You 'Til We Meet Again."

Other activities for the week included swimming, fishing, going to the cave and visiting with relatives and friends. Camp cook was Chris St. George.

The 123rd annual reunion has been set for Aug. 4 through Aug. 11, 2013.
