A new Turkey Day tradition

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Thanksgiving has long earned a reputation as a day when families and friends gather to eat, sit and watch football together, but two communities in the bi-county area are hoping to change that by offering an opportunity to start the day with a bit of exercise. Both Pierce City and Monett will be offering Thanksgiving morning 5K runs.

The second annual Pilgrim's Run in Pierce City will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 22. The event, which benefits the local Food for Thought backpack program, is sponsored by the Decatur Lodge #400. In addition to the 5K run, area residents can also participate in a one-mile walk.

For those who pre-register by Nov. 10, the race fee is $20 per adult and $10 per child 12 and younger. On the day of the run, the fee increases to $25 for adults and $15 for children. Those who pre-register will also receive a T-shirt.

Registration will be accepted until the day of the race, and forms are available at the Monett YMCA and the Pierce City City Hall or by calling Larry Eden at 417-476-3016 or Sallie Pryor at 417-669-8481.

The Food for Thought backpack program depends solely on local gifts and donations from generous individuals, organizations and churches. During the past two years, the program has provided approximately 14,400 meals to elementary and middle school children, according to program coordinator Susan M. Gripka.

Monett Turkey Trot

For the second year, the Monett First United Methodist Church will host a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving day. The 5K run and one-mile fun run or walk will begin at 8:30 a.m., and a free breakfast, served by volunteers with the Monett Community Kitchen, will be provided post-race to all participants on the morning of the race.

Proceeds from the Turkey Trot will be divided between Crosslines and the Monett Community Kitchen.

The 5K race fee is $15 for adults and $40 for a family who pre-register before Nov. 13. After that day, the 5K fee increases to $20 for adults and $45 for families. The fee to participate in the one-mile run is $10 per person or $25 per family. Participants also have the option of ordering a long-sleeved technical T-shirt for $8.

Registration forms are available at Monett First United Methodist Church at 1600 N. Central. For more information, contact Charlene Dart at 417-235-7444 or cdart@sofnet.com.

Those who register for both the Pierce City Pilgrim's Run and the Monett Turkey Trot, will receive a $5 discount on each run.
