Volunteer firefighter pleas guilty to arson

A volunteer firefighter from Ash Grove is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in Lawrence County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Oct. 9 to two felony counts of arson.

Cody Gossett, 21, was charged with arson following an investigation by the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, the Missouri Highway Patrol and the State Fire Marshal's Office. The charges involved the destruction of two structures that occurred in August of last year and in October of 2010.

Two other men are serving five years probation in connection with the case. Matthew Smith, 23, and Christopher Smith, 21, both of Mt. Vernon, pleaded guilty to arson and burglary charges last March.

Sentencing for Gossett has been set for April 8, 2013, in Lawrence County Circuit Court before the Honorable Jack Goodman.
