High school graduates interested in entering the field of criminal justice have the opportunity to apply for a $1,000 scholarship to attend classes.
The John Dennis Scholarship, awarded by the Missouri Sheriff's Association, is for criminal justice majors only. Funds will be granted to 16 students who demonstrate financial need and plan to attend a Missouri college or university.
Applicants must be in good standing with their school, have a good reference from their counselor, maintained a 2.0 grade point average or higher, be active in extra-curricular activities and include paragraph detailing their goals and plans 10 years after graduation.
The award was established in 1988 in honor of former Scott County Sheriff John Dennis, who served the county for 24 years. In 1963, Dennis was elected president of the Missouri Sheriff's Association. He retired from his position of Scott County sheriff in 1976 after successfully winning a bid for a Missouri Senate seat in District 27.

Applications, along with the paragraph, must be submitted by January 31, 2013.
