It's apple butter making time for the Monett Lions Club. The popular delicacy has been cooked and carefully prepared by Lions Club members in recent weeks. This year's batch will go on sale this weekend at Marionville's Apple Fest and will be available at Apple Butter Makin' Days in Mt. Vernon on Oct. 12 through Oct. 14. The Lions have developed an assembly line strategy for preparing apple butter. At left, glass containers are sterilized and prepared for packing. Shown, from left, are: Ralph Scott, Randy Stephens, Laura, Hanna, and John Butterfield, Zana Botzow and Robbie Davis. At center left, Al Dohmen Jr. stirs the apple butter until the preparation is ready for bottling. At center right, a team pours the apple butter and seals the jars. Shown, from left, are: Zana Botzow, Tom Wormington, Bill Botzow, Doug Wallner and Theresa Botzow. There will be half-pint, pint and quart jars for sale at both events in regular and sugar free. At right, Hannah Butterfield, age 10, worked on preparing the lids. Hannah and her parents, John and Laura Butterfield, came to Monett from Madison, Ala., to learn how to make apple butter so it can become an annual fundraiser in their community.
