MMS Cubs football season underway

The Monett Middle School Cubs seventh and eighth grade football teams opened the 2012 gridiron season with mixed results.

On Sept. 6, each squad began the season at Mt. Vernon

The seventh grade Cubs fell 36-16 despite getting a 1-yard touchdown run from Jedd Anderson and a 70-yard touchdown run from Bailey Austin.

In the eighth grade contest, Monett picked up a 28-14 victory.

Kyler Gray scored a pair of first half touchdowns, on runs of 70 and 31 yards respectively. Gray, and Mason Swearingen added scoring runs of 10 and 35 yards in the second half to carry the Cubs.

On Sept. 13, Monett hosted Aurora.

The seventh grade squad (0-1-1) played to a 6-6 draw.

Gabe Pryor plowed into the end zone from 8 yards out to provide the only points for the purple and gold.

The eighth grade team improved to 2-0 with a 30-8 victory over the Houn' Dawgs.

Pryor and Gray scored first half touchdowns with Gray and Ian Meyer converting two-point opportunities.

Monett secured the win with fourth quarter scores on a 29-yard Pryor run and a 50-yard jaunt by Gray.

The MMS Cubs host Seneca tonight at Burl Fowler Stadium. Kickoff for the seventh grade contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. immediately followed by the eighth grade game.
