The Monett Police Department, with the assistance of the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and other agencies, will conduct a sobriety checkpoint before Oct. 1. The Monett Police Department takes a strong stance against drunk driving and makes the safety of the Monett citizens, as well as all of the motoring public, their top priority.

The 2012 Missouri MIA/POW Awareness Run, sponsored by Rolling Thunder Missouri Chapter #1, will place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Cassville's Irwin Easley American Legion Post 118, located on Highway 112 South, in Cassville. The commemorative ride honoring all Missouri MIA and POW military personnel will stage at the Phantom Jet at Monett's South Park at 11:30 a.m. and leave at 12:30 p.m. for the ride to Cassville.

The Monett City Council will hold a work session at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 to discuss plans for the City Park Casino and review the 2011-12 fiscal year audit.

The First Presbyterian Church, located at 700 Sycamore in Monett, will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22.

A country breakfast will be served at the Pierce City Senior Citizens Center from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. The meal will include eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy and beverage for $5, or $3.50 for children ages 5 to 10. Former Pierce City students will be in town for a reunion weekend. The Freistatt Fire Department will host an antique tractor and lawn mower pull at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, on the Ernte Fest grounds in Freistatt. Admission is $10, free to children 12 and under. Proceeds will benefit the fire department.

Christ United Methodist Church in Monett is hosting a free hot dog cookout and "God Rules" science show from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. The science show will be in the sanctuary. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the cookout. The church is located on Maple Street, behind AutoZone.

The descendants of Joseph and Lillie May (Patton) Elbert will hold their annual reunion luncheon on Sunday, Sept. 23 at noon at Grant's restaurant, located at 114 Chapell Drive in Monett.

The Southwest Missouri Tea Party will meet at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 24 at the VFW Post on Highway 39 in Shell Knob.

The Mt. Vernon Veterans Home will host its ninth annual Ride for Freedom to benefit veterans assisted by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 4-3. The motorcycle poker run will travel approximately 115 miles, leaving the Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. The 24th annual Marionville Apple Fest will be Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22. A full schedule of attractions and activities has been planned. Events will center around the stage in the southeast corner of the square. Vendors will set up around the square. There will be live music both nights, a carnival and a parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
