The Southwest Missouri Office on Aging (SWMOA) is hosting The Main Event Walk-A-Thon, starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, on the exercise loop at Monett's South Park.
The event is the annual fundraiser to replenish and supply adequate equipment for the local meals program for senior citizens.
The Monett Senior Center, located at 405 Dairy St. in Monett, serves hot meals Monday through Friday, except on holidays, for a $3.50 contribution for those ages 60 years and older.
Volunteer drivers also deliver hot meals to homebound seniors in the Monett, Freistatt, Pierce City and Purdy areas.
This year's goal is $5,000, with funds dedicated to replenish and update equipment in order to keep the center functional.
The center provides a safe place for senior adults to socialize with friends and play games, participate in various activities and watch television. The center also offers assistance to seniors with tax questions or Medicare D issues and provides information on governmental issues affecting seniors.
Members of the community and local businesses are encouraged to donate to the Monett Senior Center, recruit a team of walkers or become an event sponsor. Walkers are required to obtain their own pledges and will be eligible for various prizes that have been donated in support of this event.
