Monett Mighty Mites begin play

The Monett Mighty Mites football program featuring teams in grades third through sixth got underway with games against Webb City and Lamar

At Webb City the young Cubs went 3-1 and Monett split four contests against Lamar.

Sixth grade

In the sixth grade game at Webb City, the Cubs took a 2-0 lead with a safety at the 29-second mark of the first quarter. The Cardinals scored a touchdown with 1:27 left in the game to prevail 6-2.

Against Lamar, the Cubs fell 36-0.

Fifth grade

Monett's fifth grade team defeated Webb City 6-0.

Gavin Austin broke a scoreless deadlock with a 37-yard touchdown run with 1:54 left in the third quarter to lift the Cubs to victory.

The fifth grade Cubs improved to 2-0 with an 18-0 victory over Lamar.

Monett's Gunner Bradley scored at the 3:56 mark of the first period to give the Cubs 6-0.

Austin scored twice in the third quarter once at the 3:30 mark and again at the 22.5 mark to provide the final margin of victory

Fourth grade

The Monett Cubs fourth grade Mighty Mites team opened the 2012 season with a 22-6 victory over Webb City.

Three different Cubs found the end zone. Monett's Dylan Lynch broke the scoreless tie with a first quarter touchdown. Blain Graver recorded the Cubs second touchdown and the two-point conversion. Matthew Bahl scored with 25 second remaining in the first half as Monett held on for the win.

The Monett fourth graders improved to 2-0 with a 26-0 victory over Lamar.

After a scoreless first period, Lynch and Graver both scored to give the Cubs a 12-0 halftime lead.

Ben Hoyt and Lynch found pay dirt in the fourth period with Tanner Wright would converting a two point try to provide the final margin of victory

Third grade

The third grade Cubs handed a 18-0 loss to the Webb City Cardinal.

Ethan Umfleet scored three touchdowns and the Monett defense pitched a shutout to complete the victory.

Against Lamar, the third grade Cubs would struggle against the Tigers spinner offense falling 54-18.

Umfleet was responsible for all three Monett scores.

Monett will be in action on Saturday at Junge Stadium in Joplin. Games are slated to begin at 10 a.m.
