Verona volleyball splits openers

The Verona Lady Wildcats volleyball team (1-1) began the 2012 season splitting their first two matches.

On Tuesday, The Lady Wildcats fell in three sets to the Clever Lady Bluejays 25-16, 11-25 and 25-19.

Clever was led by Bailey Bauman's four kills and 20 digs. Julia Krebs contributed three kills. Lacey Menzie added six assists and Abby Twigg finished with three aces

Verona was led by Amanda Mullen with 10 kills and 13 digs. Jessica Youngberg recorded six assists. Shelby Barsotti and Taylor Pinkly chipped in 25 combined digs.

Verona prevailed in junior varsity action 25-22 and 25-23.


Last Thursday, the Lady Wildcats earned a straight set victory over Hurley 25-15 and 25-20.

Mullen had six kills and four blocks. Youngberg added six kills. Pinkly and Leann Hesemann recorded five digs apiece and Barsotti finished with 10 assists and four aces.

Verona won the junior varsity match in three sets 25-14, 21-25 and 25-19.

Melissa Martinez finished with seven aces and three blocks. Fatima Jiminez recorded four kills. Tori Pinkly chipped in nine digs and Danielle Roetto finished with six assists.

Verona hosts its annual tournament on Saturday. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m.
