The Monett Lady Cubs softball team improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Big 8 Conference play with a 1-0 win over Lamar Tuesday night.
"We will take a win any way we can get it," said Monett coach Ty Goetz. "It is good for us to win close ballgames. It will help us down the road."
Monett scored the game's only run in the top of the sixth inning.
With one out, Raigan Ratliff singled to right field, stole second and third base. Ratliff scored on Abby Krueger's ground out to third base.
Allie Krueger and Ratliff combined to save the victory for Monett.
Allie started the game and pitched two and one-third innings and struck out four batters. Ratliff, who earned the victory, went four and two-thirds innings, gave up one hit and struck out two.
The Lady Cubs struggles at the plate were a concern for Goetz. Every Monett batter struck out at least once during the game.
"Lamar has a very solid pitcher," said Goetz. "But we can't strike out 12 times. We're too experienced to not get it fixed."
Shortstop Brooke Madison was stellar on the defensive end for the Lady Cubs. Madison had five assists and two put outs in the contest. She also recorded all three outs in the seventh inning to preserve the victory.
In the junior varsity game, Monett rolled to a 10-1 victory.
Ashton Ratliff earned the victory on the mound.
Abby Krueger and Leticia Rivera each scored two runs. Kendall Bounous, Ashton Ratliff, Haylee Morris, Breanna Kelley, Taylor Rhea and Sydney Bounds all scored one run apiece.
The varsity Lady Cubs are in action tonight as they host Southwest. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
