Offensive explosion carries soccer Cubs to win

After a slow start, the scoring floodgates opened and the Monett soccer Cubs poured in three goals in a 12-minute span and raced to a 8-0 victory over Aurora last Thursday.

"We started slower than I would like to see," said Monett coach Dan Janssen. "Around the 25-minute mark we started clicking. I was proud of the way we attacked from then on. You could see things we are working on in practice being applied to game situation."

Juan Salas started the scoring bonanza for the Cubs with a goal off an Eddie Aceves assist in the 15th minute. Senior Luis Gonzales sent the checkered ball between the pipes in the 26th minute off another Aceves assist.

Aceves finished the night with a hat trick of goals, the first goal coming in the 27th minute off a nice pass from Gonzales. Francisico Morales scored on a penalty kick in the 34th minute.

Aceves found the back of the net again in the 35th minute off a feed from Salas to complete the first half tallies.

Jairo Rueda goal in the 42nd minute off a Morales set opened the second half action. Salas and Aceves completed the scoring with goals in the 61st and 67th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Caleb Blue, was up to the shutout challenge. Blue made eight saves.

"We were improved on defense tonight," said Janssen. "We still have a long ways to go to get to where we want to be, but tonight was a step in the right direction."

In the junior varsity game Monett fell 3-1. The Cubs lone goal was scored by Valentin Vizcaino.

The soccer Cubs travel to Rogersville on Thursday for a battle with the Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
