Leroy Osterloh

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

Franklin "Leroy" Osterloh, 76, of Lafayette, Ind. and former longtime resident of Monett, Missouri, passed away at 11 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2012, surrounded by his family at St. Elizabeth Central Hospital in Lafayette, Ind.

He was born on May 17, 1936 on a farm near Freistatt, Mo. to the late Hilbert Ernest Carl and Selma (Fieker) Osterloh. He attended elementary school at the Trinity Lutheran School in Freistatt and graduated from Monett High School in 1954.

His marriage of over 53 years was to Roberta Lamb on June 20, 1959 in Monett, Mo. She survives.

The first half of his career was as a purchasing agent for EFCO Corporation in Monett and in 1976 he became owner/operator of Curt's Camper Sales in Monett. In 1997 he retired due to health reasons and moved with his wife to Lafayette, Ind. to be near their daughter and her family.

The "ultimate camper," Leroy loved camping and spending time outdoors. He was an avid supporter of education and was very active with his wife's career in education as a teacher, principal and long-time administrator of Monett Elementary.

Leroy was a 20-year member of the Monett Lions Club and was known to devote countless hours to their two main fundraisers, Apple Butter Making Days and the July Fourth Independence Day celebrations, both of which raised needed monies for the Lions Club sight preservation projects.

Leroy was very proud of his longstanding association with the American Cancer Society's "Road to Recovery," driving those in need to and from treatments.

Mr. Osterloh was an elder and president of the congregation of St. John's Lutheran Church in Monett and, since moving to Lafayette, was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was also a long-time officer of the Waterstone Homeowner's Association.

Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Leah Everly (husband, Michael) of West Lafayette; two granddaughters, Rebecca Anne and Amanda Jane Everly; and a sister, Carol Wogoman, of Springfield, Mo.; along with a niece, Debbie Jackson (husband, Chris) and nephew, David Baker (wife, Wendy) and their families.

Leroy was a wonderful example of how to live as a Christian, showing his faith and heart through his actions as well as his words.

A celebration of his life was held on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church (102 Buckingham Drive, Lafayette, IN, 47909). Pastor Ed Morrow officiated. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or Trinity Mission.
