The Monett Cubs soccer team (1-1) opened the 2012 season splitting its first two contests of the season.
On Tuesday, Monett defeated Republic 3-2.
"Our passing was much improved tonight as compared to our first game," said Monett coach Dan Janssen. "We were able to move the ball more to our wings and get them involved in the action, play which led to a lot more quality shots on net."
Monett jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead with goals by Eddie Aceves, off a corner kick, in the 19th minute. Miseal Codero assisted with the goal. The Cubs went up 2-nil when Jario Rueda scored in the 48th minute with an assist credited to Fransisco Morales. Cordero completed the Cubs scoring in the 66th minute with an unassisted goal.
"Jario's goal was the result of a nice give and go with Fransisco that really energized the team," said Janssen. "We used some different people in different spots throughout the game trying to find the best combination of players."
The Tigers would make the game interesting late scoring goals in the 70th and 77th minutes to cut the advantage to one.
"Some of the new players really impressed me and will provide extra depth as the season goes on," said Janssen. "The final two minutes were very exciting to watch. Republic was pressuring hard looking to even the score but our defense was able to fend them off."
The Cubs junior varsity defeated Republic 3-2.
On Monday, Monett fell 2-1 to Carl Junction
The Bulldogs dominated possession the first several minutes and left the Cubs chasing instead attacking,' said Janssen. "We withstood their initial attack and were able to get some chances while they were on their heels."
Aceves scored Monett's only goal in 22nd minute. The game was a stalemate after that with each team having some scoring chances, but not capitalizing.
A defensive miscue led to a breakaway goal for the Bulldogs with about one minute to play in the first half.
"While I am disappointed with the loss," said Janssen. "I saw some good things on the field and some areas we clearly need to work on. But it is a long season and we will learn from this game and try to get better for the end of the season when wins are harder to come by and the games mean a little but more."
Monett and Carl Junction tied in the junior varsity contest 2-2.
The Cubs will be in action at home on tonight against Aurora. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
