How Dry I Am

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Clear Creek in Pierce City was so low during Howdy Neighbor Days that organizers drove a Gator in the stream to help pile up rocks to build a faster channel along the eastern edge where the ducks would not get stranded. The beginning of the duck race is shown above. All the water for daily flow in Clear Creek, when there is no rain, is treated effluent from the Monett waste treatment plant. Monett Utilities Superintendent Pete Rauch said the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' has classified Clear Creek as a losing stream, possibly due to underground drains. "Evaporation probably claims a third of the water discharged from Monett's plant," Rauch said. "In addition, most Monett industry uses substantially less water on the weekend," thus reducing the amount of water to discharge, Rauch added. [Times Photo by Murray Bishoff]
