The Monett Lady Cubs softball team improved to 4-0 this young season with a 3-1 victory over Republic Monday night.

Monett rallied for two runs in the seventh inning spurred by clutch hitting to keep their record unblemished.

"Tonight was a big win for our girls," said Monett coach Ty Goetz. "We needed a close game against a quality opponent this early in the season. I was proud of the way our girls responded after Republic tied the game late."

The Lady Cubs Allie Krueger, who was a perfect three for three at the plate, singled to open the seventh inning and scored on Jessica Harper's one-out single. Harper crossed the plate on Abby Krueger's two out RBI single.

Allie Krueger (3-0) scattered four hits and allowed one earned run while fanning 11 hitters in seven innings of work to earn the victory. Krueger has struck out 35 batters in 20 innings of pitching this season and has a .035 ERA.

Monett took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Allie Krueger scored on a Harper single. The Lady Tigers responded with the equalizing run in the bottom of the sixth.

Kelsey Wiseman collected two hits and a RBI and Harper added two hits and two RBI for the Lady Cubs.

Monett fell 4-3 in the junior varsity game. Ashton Ratliff, Abby Kruger, Brooke Madison and Leticia Rivera each collected a hit. Krueger, Madison and Breanna Kelley each scored a run.

Ash Grove

On Saturday, the Lady Cubs advanced to the championship game of the Ash Grove Tournament with a 6-0 victory over Marionville and then handed the host Lady Pirates a 9-1 setback. However, Mother Nature intervened and the championship game was postponed. No make-up date has been set.

Against the Lady Comets, the Lady Cubs got another outstanding pitching performance from Allie Krueger. Krueger went six innings, allowed two hits and struck out 10.

Monett struck for two runs in the third inning when Brooke Burnside and Raigan Ratliff each singled. With two outs, sophomore slugger Abby Krueger belted a triple to score Burnside and Ratliff.

In the fourth, the Lady Cubs plated two more runners.

Andrea Soriano walked, then stole second and scored on Allie Krueger's double to left field. Krueger would steal third and scored on a passed ball.

Soriano's triple in the fifth inning scored Wiseman, who had walked to give Monett a 5-0 lead. Soriano scored on an error to complete the scoring.

Against the Lady Pirates, Monett scored three times in the first inning and added five more tallies in the second frame and cruised to a 9-1 win.

Soriano went two for three at the plate and scored two runs. Burnside had three RBI.

Wiseman was one for three at the plate and collected two RBI.

Ratliff (1-0) collected her first win of the season. She allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out seven in five innings of work.

The Lady Cubs will be in action on Thursday as they host rival Cassville. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
