Missouri Weekly Hay Summary Week ending 08/24/12

Thursday, August 23, 2012

With 99 percent of Missouri's pastures in poor or very poor condition it
isn't likely to rebound for fall without extensive rain. It has also further
tightened the supply of grass hay within Missouri. These tight supplies have
spurred hay movement from the South and Southeastern parts of the country.
The prices on those sales is variable as is the quality. Hay buyers in Missouri
are urged to use caution when making hay purchases from those regions as they
are within the hay quarantine area for Invasive Fire Ants. Before hay can be moved
it must be certified to be free of Invasive Fire Ants. For more information about
this quarantine visit http://agebb.missouri.edu/haylst/fireant.htm
In addition to out-of-state sales, sales of alternative feeds are also increasing.
The supply of hay within Missouri remains very light, with very good demand
and steady prices. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay
directory available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed,or for a directory
visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/haydirectory/ or for current listings of hay
