Offensively, the Cubs return several key players from last year. The biggest question mark will be on the defensive side of the ball where the numbers of returning players were decimated due to graduation including the goalie position.
"I hope to be able to carry the offensive growth and level of intensity from last season into this season," said Monett coach Dan Janssen. "We lost our goalkeeper and three defensive players to graduation. We will be looking for young players to step-up and take these positions, even if it means playing out of their natural position."
"We have some great senior leadership this year," said Janssen. "Our work ethic in the off-season has been outstanding and the team is bonding very quickly in early practice sessions."
The Missouri State High School Activities Association has yet to release class and district alignments for the current season. However, Janssen isn't worried; he wants his team to take the matches one at a time.
Returning for the Cubs this season are: Jorge Aceves, Francisco Morales, Will Snider, Jorge Aceves, Leonardo Regalado. Eddie Acevas, Jairo Rueda and Misael Cordero.
The Soccer Cubs open the season on Aug. 27 at Carl Junction. Monett's home opener is Aug. 30 against Aurora.
