Monett firefighters helped fight a fire on the Glenn and O.D. Cope farm, located approximately six miles southeast of Monett, on Friday. According to Monett Rural Fire Chief Larry Eden, neighbors burning trash started the fire, which quickly spread. Monett firefighters were notified shortly before 5 p.m. when there was a question about whose department's members were at risk. Monett city and rural firefighters responded, with rural firefighters protecting neighboring members that were threatened. The fire spread into the Copes' barn and ignited 400 bales of hay. Responding in addition to Monett were Aurora city and rural fire departments, Marionville, Freistatt and Pierce City Rural. Aurora firefighters stayed on the scene into the night. Eden said a fire of that nature may burn for several days.
