Ernte Fest coming Aug. 17-18 in Freistatt

Monday, August 13, 2012

Plans are complete for the Freistatt Lions Club's 39th annual Ernte Fest, to be held Friday, Aug. 17 and Saturday, Aug. 18 on the Ernte Fest grounds in Freistatt.

The German heritage festival will again feature traditional German food plus rides, games and live music.

Dinner service will begin at 4:30 p.m. The menu will include bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, green beans, bread, cookie and a beverage. Other snacks, sandwiches and dinner items are available at the snack shack. Dinner will be $8 for adults and $5 for children.

Games will include bingo for adults, a pony-driven merry-go-round, a number of rides for small children, skill challenges such as a ring and cane toss and games of chance like Webber's Folly.

A variety of beers will be available in the bier garten, which will open at 4:30 p.m. both nights. A valid picture identification will be required. For the first time, admission to the bier garten of $3 will be charged. Beer sales will be done by token only.

Live entertainment will again include two stages. The Johnnie Zibert Band, from Tulsa, Okla., will play German music both nights from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by the Sauerkrauts, from San Antonio, Texas. Both bands will play from the festival's permanent stage near the dining area.

The second stage, located in the southwest corner of the festival grounds, will have different bands both nights, beginning at 8 p.m. On Friday, Liz Moriando and her band returns to play country music with a rock and blues flavor on Friday. Southern Green will play rock and country on Saturday.

Live music will continue until midnight.

As a special feature, an anvil shooting demonstration will be offered at the field southwest of the main grounds at 7:30 p.m.

Parking on the Ernte Fest grounds will cost $3. The Lions report discounted group charters are available from Fisk Transportation in Springfield and Crossroads Charters in Joplin.

Proceeds from the festival benefit Lions charities, such as vision restoration and screening services. Local organizations providing manpower to run the festival or its attractions will also earn funds for the hours worked.

Ernte Fest sponsors include First Independent Bank of Aurora, Freistatt Mutual Insurance Company, Larson Farm and Lawn Inc. of Freistatt, Hiland Dairy Foods, Johnsonville Brats, Jack Link's Beef Jerky, Community National Bank, the Freistatt Farmers Exchange and Tents for all Events.

The Ernte Fest grounds are located on the north edge of Freistatt on Highway H.
