The Monett City Council will hold its August monthly meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 20.

Entries are being accepted for the Aurora Chamber of Commerce's annual Little Miss and Mister Houn Dawg and Little Miss and Mister Beagle pageant for children ages 4 to 10 on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Pate School Auditorium. Entries must reside in Lawrence, Barry or Stone counties. Deadline for entries is Sept. 10. Applications are avaliable at the chamber office, Norma's InLine Fashions, A Salon or Perfect Images.

The Monett Special Road District commissioners will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, at the Monett City Hall conference room.

The Monett Senior Citizens Center, located at 405 Dairy St., is available for rent for various public gatherings. For more information, call 235-3285.

A monthly dance featuring the Funtimers Band will be offered at 7 p.m. on thursday, Aug. 23, at the Pierce City Senior Citizens Center, located at 104 Locust St. Admission is $3. Guests are encouraged to bring finger foods.

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held at the First Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ), located at 603 Fourth St., from 1 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20.

The Monett/Purdy Habitat for Humanity affiliate will meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the First Christian Church in Monett, located at Fourth and Wishart.

Purdy Elementary School will hold its open house from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14. Parents and students are urged to attend, become acquainted with the staff and facilities. New superintendent Dr. Steven Chancellor will be on hand to greet those attending.

A spaghetti dinner will be hosted by American Legion Post #91 on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12, The cost includes salad, dessert and beverage. The Post is located at 717 E. Broadway.

The VFW Post #4207 Ladies Auxiliary will host a luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu will consist of roast pork stuffing with gravy, season carrots, salads, dessert and beverage for $6.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department will host basic law enforcement academy beginning Aug. 16. The academy will be a 700-hour course that will qualify graduates with a Class A peace officer license in Missouri. Sessions will meet Tuesday and Thursday nights and weekends. Registration is available online at www.mosheriffs.com.

A class on CPR and first aid for newborns will be offered from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16 in conference room B at Cox Monett Hospital. A class on siblings for families of newborns will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Cox Monett Hospital, in the Conference Room C on the third floor. Classes are free to women who plan to deliver at Cox Monett. Registration is required and can be made by calling 417-354-1300.

Community workshops for families of persons with Alzheimer's disease are offered each Wednesday in August at 6 p.m. at the Home Instead Senior Care office, located at 705 Illinois Ave., Suite 16, in Joplin. For more information, call 417-625-1868.

OACAC Head Start in Monett is now accepting applications for sessions beginning in September. Full or half-day sessions are available. Families must meet income guidelines and have children who are age 3 or 4 prior to Aug. 1. For information, call 235-3911 or 235-8779.
