Deputies investigate possible homicide

Sunday, August 12, 2012 ~ Updated 1:59 PM

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department is investigating a possible homicide after a body was discovered in a wooded area of the county on Sunday morning.

According to a press release issued by Sheriff Brad DeLay at 11:24 a.m. on Sunday, the name of the deceased is not being released pending notification of the family. An autopsy to determine cause of death is pending.

The body was discovered the morning after Lawrence County deputies responded to a call of shots fired involving a possible injury at a residence northeast of Pierce City.

When deputies arrived at the scene on Saturday evening, no one was present but it was obvious there had been a group of people there due to the large amount of food and beverages near the house.

According to DeLay, deputies also found what they believed to be a large amount of blood at the scene. Detectives were then called out to process the area as a potential crime scene.

At approximately 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12, the sheriff's office received a call about a possible body found along a roadway in a wooded area. The body was located by deputies a few miles from the site of the original call.

DeLay said further details about the possible crime will be released as the investigation continues.
