The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office will host a law enforcement academy beginning Aug. 16 at the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office. The 700-hour course will qualify students with a Class A peace officer license in Missouri. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights as well as Saturdays and some Sundays. Graduates will be certified in several areas. To apply, visit the Missouri Sheriff's Association website at www.mosheriffs.com and click on the training academy tab. Financial aid is available.

The Aurora Chamber of Commerce will host a 4-person scramble golf tournament at Honey Creek Golf Course starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 28. Entry fees are $240 per four-person team and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, prizes and cash winners. For more information, call the Aurora Chamber of Commerce at 417-678-4150.

A rabies clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 21, at the South Park in Pierce City, at the west pavilion, sponsored by the Animal Clinic of Monett and the Pierce City Police Department. Cost is $7.50 per animal.

The Purdy Festival will get underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 21. The inaugural event will feature a chicken dinner, served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., amusement rides, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, a farmer's market, a bbq cook-off, a fiddle contest and more. Local favorites Tequila, Lime, No Salt will round out the evening's musical entertainment, starting at 8 p.m.

The City of Pierce City will be spraying for mosquitoes starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18.

The Pleasant Ridge Special Road District commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 16, at the Pleasant Ridge school house on Highway Z.

Vacation Bible School at Chapel of Grace will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 16 through July 20. The theme is "Babylon: Daniel's Courage in Captivity." Chapel of Grace is located south of Highway 60 on Farm Road 1060. For more information, call 235-7545 or 236-9072.

Vacation Bible School at the First Christian Church of Purdy will have opening ceremonies on Saturday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m., including a parade of nations and a running of the torch. The theme is "Christian Olympics." Classes will be held July 15 through July 18 at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, call 417-442-7445.

The Aurora Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet on at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, in the private dining room at Mercy Hospital in Aurora. No admission, fee but donations will be accepted. For more information, call 678-3580 or 678-2666.

A spaghetti dinner will be offered by Hobbs-Anderson American Legion Post #91 from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 19 at the Legion Home, 717 E. Broadway. Cost is $5 for adults.

A babysitters training camp will be held July 16 through July 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. by the American Red Cross. The fee is $150. Campers will be certified in babysitters training, infant and child CPR and first aid.
