A Monett woman was attacked and robbed in her home in a residential neighborhood in the northeast area of the city on Saturday.
According to Monett Police Chief Tim Schweder, the 84-year-old victim was found about 3 p.m. on the floor of her bedroom. She told officers who responded to the 911 call that a man had entered the bedroom, pulled her from the bed and sexually molested her. The suspect also took her purse and medic alert button. It appears the suspect entered the home through an overhead garage door that was found open.
Detectives collected evidence at the scene and the victim was taken to Cox Monett Hospital for examination. Her injuries were not life-threatening.
"Violent crime is unusual in Monett," Schweder said. "Violent crimes against the elderly are particularly dangerous because the victims are usually in poor health, unable to defend themselves and living alone.
"The victim could have been seriously injured," Schweder continued.
