Between 800 and 1,000 people gathered on the lawn of New Site Baptist Church on Sunday for the church's fourth annual July Fourth community picnic and fireworks show.

Following the serving of food, games and live entertainment, the fireworks show was offered over the field south of the church. Pastor Aaron Weibel said word that the official Monett celebration on Wednesday had been cancelled helped to raise attendance at the church's event.

The fireworks show lasted 20 minutes and prompted appreciative rounds of applause from the crowd.

Pastor Aaron Weibel said the Monett Rural Fire Association hosed down the field used for launching the fireworks before the show as a fire precaution. "We were a little nervous, but it worked out," Weibel said. [Times Photos by Murray Bishoff]
