Monett's Fourth of July celebration has been postponed due to the weather.
Brittie Oakley, with the Festival and Fireworks Committee, announced on Sunday that after days of consultations with the Monett Fire Department and other others involved in organizing the celebration that the heat and dry conditions were too great a threat to continue as planned.
A burn ban has been in place for a week. No rain to remedy the drought which has created tinder-like conditions is in sight.
"It's just too hot," said Captain Danny Fowler with the Monett Fire Department. "There's no sense taking a chance on people getting hurt. It's safer this way."
The Monett Alumni Association has called off its gathering at the City Park Casino on Wednesday as well.
Gordon Brown, executive director for the Monett Area YMCA, said the municipal swimming pool will nonetheless remain open for a free swim day as promised on Wednesday. The pool will be open from 1 to 6 p.m.
The fireworks celebration will be rescheduled for the Labor Day weekend, Oakley said. The decision had not yet been made about having it on the Friday or Monday of that holiday period. The committee would make an announcement closer to the date.
