Post #91 sweeps Webb City in twinbill

Monett's Post #91 American Legion squad swept a AAA twinbill from Webb City on Thursday night, 11-3 and 13-4. The two home wins pushed the Monett team's season record to 17-11 with a 7-3 league record.

Playing in record heat in the early game, Post #91 built an early 9-0 lead, thanks to four-run outbursts in both the first and third innings. Ben Makela pitched all seven innings for the win. Peoples pitched the entire game for Webb City.

Caldwell, Robbins, Savage, and Phillips all scored for Monett in a wild first inning. Caldwell's leadoff walk set the stage for the big inning, and Post #91 took the advantage with four hits in the frame.

After Sean Goostree scored in the second inning on a two-out bases-loaded walk to make the score 5-0, the Monett team drummed up four more runs in the third. Goostree's RBI single plated Reese Stevenson, and Ben Makela scored as well. Josh Steward's double brought in Goostree and Robbins for a 9-0 lead.

Webb City scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth, but Monett added two insurance runs in the fourth to seal the 11-3 victory.

In the nightcap, Webb City took a brief 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Post #91 answered with a three-inning skein of 13 runs enroute to the 13-4 win in a six-inning contest.

Powell, Schied, and Roberts scored to give Monett a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Then Post #91 broke the game open with back-to-back five-run innings.

Nick Childress pitched four innings for Monett and earned the victory. Harbin took the loss for Webb City.
