Pam Price, conservation education director for the Dickerson Park Zoo, in Springfield, brought animals to show to the children for the Summer Reading Program at the Monett Branch on Wednesday. At right, Price showed off Remy, a hooded Norwegian rat. At center, Price talked about Hedwig, a grey horned owl, explaining special features like the owl's double eyelids, its ability to turn its head much farther than people due to extra neck bones, and how feathers on top of the head give the illusion of horns. At right, Price explained the traits of Alina, a greater tenrec, a member of the hedgehog family from Madagascar. She also brought Miki, a black rat snake. Around 120 children attended the program, according to children's librarian Leann Rosewicz. [Times Photos by Murray Bishoff]
