Independence Day plans taking shape

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Preparations for the Monett celebration of the nation's birthday are nearing completion. The Freedom and Fireworks Committee have announced vendor registration and a partial list of the entertainment.

Brittie Oakley, with the Freedom and Fireworks Committee, said construction of the new Monett-area YMCA facility has taken away much of the traditional parking area on the southwest corner of the park. Organizers have arranged to move the public gathering to the soccer fields off Waldensian Road.

Twenty vendors had booked space by the end of last week. Electricity outlets will be available for vendors, similar to what the Jaycees use for their annual carnival, which will be held July 18 through July 21.

Booths for vendors selling products and food will be $50. Informational booths or stands for political candidates will be $25.

Booth space can be secured by calling Oakley at 489-0197. Forms for vendors can be requested by e-mail at freedomandfireworks@yahoo.com.

Fundraising to cover the fireworks show is "very close to the goal," Oakley said, thanks in large part to a matching commitment from the City of Monett. The committee will continue to seek donations to cover the $2,500 deposit for next year's event with AM Pyrotechnics of Buffalo.

Entertainment slots are still open for groups or individuals wishing to perform or provide demonstrations during the day. The Freedom Talent Show will be held in the early evening, open to singers, dancers and other performers. A panel will judge the contestants and award the $50 cash prize.

Anyone interested in performing during the day or in the talent show can contact Amanda Stokes at 417-872-8053 or by e-mail at astokes414@gmail.com. Deadline to sign up for the talent show is Monday, July 2.

`Additional music will be provided through the day by Brent Beeson with Shockwave Mobile Entertainment.

The day will begin at 11 a.m. when the Monett Lions Club will begin serving their barbecued chicken dinners from the pavilion, south of the City Park Casino. The YMCA will have the municipal swimming pool open from 1 to 6 p.m. for free swimming.

Booths for vendors will open at noon and remain open until around 9:30 p.m., when the fireworks will begin. The main bands headlining the evening entertainment will be Lain'z Hot Rod Gang from Branson and the Monett-based bluegrass band, Spur of the Moment.

Plans are still taking shape to have a patriotic address around 8 p.m.

The location of the main celebration offers potential complications for fireworks. A typical prevailing southwest wind has been known to carry debris from the fireworks onto the soccer fields. Oakley said AM Pyrotechnics will consider adjusting the fireworks launching strategy for the best result. The southeastern hillside of the park remains the best location for providing an aerial show, she added
