Nashville recording artist Michael Deese will perform at a fundraiser for local food banks, St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the Make a Wish Foundation at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, at South Park in Pierce City. Singer/songwriter of the Year for 2009, Deese will play as part of a day-long event. For more information, call 417-476-2921.

Missouri Summer Safety Week runs June 24 through June 30 to highlight the risks of excessive heat. Public cooling centers can be found at MO.gov by entering a zip code, city or county. The Department of Health urges people to check on friends and family who do not have air conditioning. Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles. Drink plenty of water and protect your face and head with a hat.

The 636th Lawrence County Gospel Sing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, at the Freewill Faith and Hope Baptist Church, located at 619 N. Elliott in Aurora. All singers and musicians are welcome. Lonnie Lawson will be the master of ceremonies.

The City of Pierce City will spray for mosquitoes on Wednesday, June 20, beginning at 7 p.m.

The Purdy baseball and softball tournament for boys and girls 12 and under will be held June 25 through June 28 at the Purdy ballfield. There are four age divisions for boys and three for girls. The Waldensian Presbyterian Church will hold its annual ice cream social on Thursday, June 28, beginning at 6 p.m. Homemade ice cream, pies and cakes, sandwiches and drinks will be available.

The Barry-Lawrence Ambulance District will host a program on helping employers safeguard their workers from injury in Thursday, June 21, at Big Baldy's Bar-B-Q. A social will be held at 11:30 a.m., followed by a presentation at noon and an ice cream social and door prizes at 12:45 p.m. Learn how to implement proper procedures and relay information to emergency medical services. The Jolly Mill Park Tal Wooten Memorial Music Event, featuring the Mark Chapman Band, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. There will be a $5 cover charge per vehicle. Attendees are urged to bring lawn chairs and refreshments. Concessions will not be available. Fireworks will be presented after dark. The Jolly Mill Park is located 10 miles west of Monett, south of Highway 60, on Farm Road 1010. Jolly Mill is an alcohol-free facility.

Hobbs-Anderson American Legion Post #91 in Monett will hold a spaghetti dinner, with salad and beverage, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 21 at the Legion Home, 717 E. Broadway. Cost is $5, or $3 for children under 12.

Easyville Fundamental Methodist Church will hold Vacation Bible School from 6:30 -- 8:30 p.m. from June 25 through June 29. The theme will be "The Way to God," with the adventure of Indiana Jess.
