Downtown Monett to get a new brand

The community has spoken and Monett Main Street now has a new logo and tagline that will be used to promote the downtown area.

An online survey attracted 138 responses, which members of the Monett Main Street Committee thought was excellent.

"This number reaffirms my thoughts that this community is truly interested in revitalizing our downtown area," said Janell Patton, chairman of the Downtown Promotion Committee.

The new logo, which was designed by Connection art director Veronica Zucca, features Monett's iconic streetlamp. This design was selected by 78 percent of those who participated in the survey.

"Logos should be simple, unique and convey your message, and I think the selected logo does just that," said Patton.

The logo that incorporated railroad tracks in its design was the second most popular choice, attracting 20 percent of the top votes.

The survey also gathered input on a tagline. The three choices included: "It's Happening Downtown;" "Get Downtown;" and "Discover Downtown."

Sixty-one percent of the survey respondents selected "Discover Downtown" as their top slogan. The second most popular choice was "It's Happening Downtown," which attracted 29 percent of the votes.

"Now, with the survey results in hand and the branding complete, the hard work begins," said Patton. "The logo, tagline and key messages should all coordinate with, and complement, each other to help build a uniformed brand identity to use in all communications."

Members of the Downtown Promotions Committee will now begin work on developing a website, promotional brochure and advertising. Wayfinding signage will also be designed under the direction of Monett Main Street's Design Committee.

"Now that the downtown brand and slogan have been determined, it's very important that we keep the volunteers involved, organized and focused on our marketing efforts," Patton said. "We will also begin to work with key downtown stakeholders to educate them regarding the benefits of adopting the brand."

Branding the downtown district is one of the first steps the Main Street group is taking toward its mission to promote downtown Monett as the activity center of the community by encouraging the development of business and education as well as parks and staging special events that highlight Monett's culture and history.
