The Monett Fire Departments Big Red Banquet was held on Friday, April 27, celebrating the success of area students who learned about fire safety.

Students were instructed every month on different types of issues including fire safety, kitchen safety, holiday safety, electrical safety, storm safety, juvenile fire starters, burn safety and summer safety.

Students were sent home with homework from each class and grades were kept to determine the top students from each class. Top students from each school earned their way to the banquet, which was held at Fire Station 2. The students spent the day with firefighters, rode in the trucks and had a pizza party at the station. They also won prizes for their hard work and efforts.

The Monett Fire Department sponsors this in-school safety training every year for the fourth grade students in the Monett district and surrounding communities.

The training began in 1988. Some of the department's current firefighters went through the same training when they were students in the district.

Next year will be the 25th year anniversary for the Big Red Program. In-school safety training programs are credited with lowering accidental fires and accidents in the home and out, as well as helping student develop safety awareness and responsibility.

The top student from all of the schools participating this year was Halle Jungmann from Stephanie Homfeldt's class. Jungmann received a score of 19 out of a possible 20 points. She was presented with a $20 gift card from Walmart for her outstanding work.

Top students in the Big Red Program this year include: St. Lawrence Catholic School, Monett, Vince Gasser class, Ashley Freiburger and Joseph Somerad; Berean Christian Academy, Stefanie Young class, Faith Brittenham, Caleb Hall and Remmington Sanders; Trinity Lutheran School, Freistatt, Shanna Jelinek class, Lily Easter, Dane Moennig and Dustin Schmidt; Monett Central Elementary, Kaylie Meeks class, Alexandra Valenciana; Megan James class, Kaesha George and Janeth Quinones; Stephanie Homfeldt class, Jungman and Reagan Washburn; Kathryn Barnum class, Dawson Copeland, Kassie McCallister and Rorri Nolan; Tera Turner class, Ashley Kurima and William Rodriguez; and Stacey Blessing class, Kelsey Dalton and Susy Salas.
