In a season full of growing pains for the young Monett Cubs baseball team, the Cubs showed a glimpse of the potential they possess with a 10-1 victory over East Newton Thursday night.

Monett ace Aaron Patton had a breakout game and dominated on the mound. Patton threw seven innings, allowed seven hits and one earned run and struck out a career best 16.

"Aaron struggled earlier this season," said Monett coach Michael Calhoun. "He has been working hard and showed exactly what he is capable of tonight. His performance on the mound was one of the best I've seen since I have coached at Monett."

Patton struggled with his control in earlier starts, and walking batters had been a problem.

"The biggest difference for Aaron tonight was that he was in control," said Calhoun. "He had great command of his pitches. He consistently worked ahead in the count and made batters hit on his terms."

The Cubs scored single runs in the first and fifth innings. An eight-run fourth inning was the key to victory.

"We saw the ball really well at the plate," said Calhoun. "We drew some walks and got big hits from Nick Childress and Quincy Jackson."

Jackson, Childress and Carlin Ballay had two RBI each for the Cubs.

Monett will be in action today at Republic. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
