Body found in Lawrence County pond

Thursday, April 26, 2012

A Greenfield man is dead following a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Farm Roads 1010 and 2080 in Lawrence County.

The crash occurred in the late hours of Tuesday, April 24 or the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 25 when the driver of a Ford Explorer, Ricky Purdy, 61, of Greenfield, left the roadway and drove through a fence and into a pond.

"It's not really clear why he lost control of the vehicle," said Lawrence County Sheriff Brad DeLay. "He apparently tried to get out of the vehicle and lost his footing in the pond and fell."

A passing motorist noticed the vehicle in the pond on Wednesday morning and notified the landowner. The land owner notified the sheriff's office after discovering the body in the pond.

"We will know more after we receive the results of an autopsy and toxicology screening," DeLay said. "It's possible that he just fell asleep or had a reaction to some medication."

The case remains under investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
