MYBSL needs more help to achieve set goals

All for the youth. Hundreds of Monett area youth spend their summer nights enjoying the sporting entertainment at Monett's North Park. The City of Monett, Monett R-1 School District and the Monett Youth Baseball and Softball League have partnered to raise $200,000 to install energy efficient lighting and make various improvements to the park. The organizations have begun several fundrasing efforts to complete the projects and are seeking additional financial help from the community.
The Monett Youth Baseball Softball League (MYBSL) is excited about the activity that is surrounding the North Park.

The MYBSL set a goal two years ago to look at the feasibility of putting up a new lighting system to better the park and the community. This goal is paying off.

The city joined us in the goal by donating money, time and resources. The Monett R-1 School District has joined in by donating funds to improve lighting on both the high school softball and baseball fields.

The MYBSL has also committed time, energy and money to this cause.

One of our main commitments is to raise money by hosting United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) softball and baseball tournaments along with Babe Ruth State tournaments. We have several committed board members, working to attract teams to play in our city.

Brick pavers

A second way of raising money for our goal is the brick paver fundraiser. With this event we hope to generate money for our lighting program as well as continue to make improvements to fields.

We have generated a small amount of money with the brick pavers program but piqued the interest of people in the community.

Our goal is to sell hundreds of pavers to install to create a wonderful landscape in the area of the dedication monument. The inscribed pavers will be placed in the park encircling the monument erected by the city in 2011.

Pavers with unique messages are a wonderful way to show support for the park and that can be seen for many years. For more information on purchasing a paver please email mybsl@suddenlink.net.

The fields continually need attention to meet the demands of playing on them. The board has lots of goals for these fields and so the more money we can generate by our hard work, the better we and the city can accomplish these goals.

To give you an update on the MYBSL efforts, we have completed two full tournaments this year and a third was rained out. These efforts have generated close to $5,000 in gross revenue that we have set aside for this lighting program.

Home tournaments

Another method that has really helped our fundraising is the creation of a tournament road for our local travelin teams. We have several teams from Monett that have been traveling to other cities. This is a great opportunity for the players to see new towns and teams.

However, I am sure it is a costly endeavor for these parents. We as a league have opened up the opportunity to our traveling teams. This year, we will be hosting four tournaments for area teams to compete and a baseball league in the 14-and-under division. This league will be played on Field 5 two nights a week. This will be local competitive ball that will hopefully pique the interest of our other traveling teams.

We would like to say thank you to the people involved with this as well as the coaches who try to keep their local teams here in Monett to play.

If we all pull together, we shall see a lot more great changes on these fields.

Lastly, as you have seen lately in the newspaper, we have received a grant from the national Babe Ruth Organization and (sports lighting provider) MUSCO.

Additionally, we have received some great support from the community. We are awaiting responses from two more possible grants. Without the combined efforts of the City and the MYBSL, we would not be where we are today.

The MYBSL, is truly blessed to have a committed city government and a group of dedicated volunteers to put such an effort towards the people of our community.
