Area districts are gearing up for summer school

Thursday, April 26, 2012

While classes may be winding down for the traditional school year, area educators are gearing up for summer school.

Purdy Schools

Purdy R-2 School District's summer class schedule will get underway on May 21 and continue through June 22. Enrollment for students in kindergarten through eighth grades will be accepted up to the opening day of summer school classes on May 21. No classes will be held on Monday, May 28 for the Memorial Day observance.

Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. prior to the start of classes. Lunch will also be provided. Both meals are free to students.

"We will offer basic core classes in the mornings, including math, communication arts, social studies and science," said Jeff Swadley, elementary school principal. "Teachers will offer exploratory activities in the afternoons."

Purdy School District will accept students from other districts who wish to enroll for the summer session.

"We have students who visit a non-custodial parent or their grandparents throughout the summer," Swadley said. "Other students enroll because their districts don't offer a summer program."

Attendance incentives are offered to students who successfully complete the program with no absences.

"At the end of summer school, students with perfect attendance receive a $100 gift card," Swadley said. "We will also award daily prizes."

Swadley said he hopes to see about 300 students enrolled in this year's program.

Transportation will not be provided.

Pierce City Schools

Pierce City R-6 District is also offering a summer session for students in all grades, starting May 29 and continuing through June 21. Students there will attend classes primarily Monday through Thursday.

Enrollment is currently underway for the summer session, and is set to end on May 7.

Free breakfast and lunches will be provided to enrolled students. Classes begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.

High school students will primarily focus on credit recovery. Some activities in the middle and elementary sessions will include swimming, walking field trips and reading.

Incentives will be offered to those achieving perfect attendance.

Transportation will not be provided.

Monett Schools

Monett R-1 School District is currently enrolling students in first through 12th grades for the summer session. Enrollment ends on May 1.

Classes will be held from 7:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served free to enrolled students.
