The Cox Monett Asthma Education Program presented a certificate of appreciation to Trinity Lutheran School in Freistatt on April 11. The school recently completed the asthma education program provided by the hospital. Funding for the program is provided by the Missouri Foundation for Health. Through the grant, Cox Monett provides education, supplies, medication assistance, home assessments, access to a pediatric pulmonologist and much more, free of charge. The program targets children in the fourth through sixth grades who live in Barry and Lawrence counties. The purpose of the program is to identify children with asthma, provide asthma education to these children and their families, improve asthma management at school and home, and provide materials and assistance as needed. This school year, 12 schools participated in the program, including Monett, Verona, Exeter, St. Lawrence Catholic (Monett), Pierce City, Aurora, Trinity Lutheran (Freistatt), Pierce City, Miller, Mt. Vernon, Marionville and Southwest R-V. Screening questionnaires were completed by more than 1,800 students in the two-county area, and over 900 students attended a general respiratory and good lung health presentation. One-hundred children are currently enrolled in or recently completed the program. For more information, contact Brenda Barger-Saunders at 417-988-5172.
