Sylvia Hultgren

Friday, April 13, 2012

Sylvia Louise Hultgren, age 95, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on April 9, 2012.

Sylvia was born on May 1, 1916 to Floyd Noble McIntosh and Anna Maude Albright McIntosh in Purdy, Mo.

Sylvia attended school in Purdy where she was valedictorian of her high school graduating class in 1933 and went on to attend Monett Junior College (1933-35). After graduation, she taught school at Rogersville for three years. She returned to college and graduated with a major in music from Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1940 and taught at other schools around Purdy before moving to California to marry her sweetheart, Walter S. Hultgren on March 5, 1941. Walter passed in 1987.

Walter and Sylvia lived in California, Oklahoma, Utah, Louisiana, Missouri, Michigan, and again in Utah, but finally retired in Monett, Mo.

Sylvia made friends easily wherever she lived, and loved to keep in contact with her friends and family in Monett as well as around the country. She took part in many church and other outside activities in Monett. Sylvia moved to Mesa, Ariz. in 2006 where she could live close to her son, Howard and daughter-in-law, Elaine. She loved to play cards, work crossword and picture puzzles and was an avid reader. She also loved to travel, and after Walter passed, she took numerous bus trips around this beautiful country of ours.

Sylvia was a very talented musician, playing the clarinet, piano, and organ and was one of the founding members of the First United Methodist Church hand bell choir in 1985. She retired from the choir in 2005.

Sylvia is survived by her two sons, R. Glen (Donzella) of Salt Lake City, Utah and Howard A. (Elaine) of Mesa, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Glen Allen (Kaleen) Hultgren, Candy (Landon) Grose, and Erin (Craig) Chagnon, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home, 216 Second Street, Monett, Mo. 65708.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at First United Methodist Church, 1600 North Central Ave., Monett, Mo. 65708 with Rev. Charlene Dart officiating. Burial will follow at IOOF Cemetery under the direction of Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home.
