The City of Purdy is looking to save money on its municipal insurance coverage by having its needs "shopped" by a dedicated agent.
Casey Chastain, representing Connell Insurance in Hollister, attended the regular April meeting of the council to explain how the city could save significantly on premiums over their present worker's comprehension insurance carrier, Traveler's, and municipal coverage insurance carrier, Meadowbrook.
Chastain said there were 40 people in the office who could actively "shop" the city's coverage for the best rates, based on the city's claims history.
"Your rating is excellent," Chastain told aldermen. "That means there are major carriers anxious to earn your business at cheaper rates."
Chastain quoted an estimate on what the city could save over their current carriers' premiums, stating, "Over three years, that adds up to a new service truck. I can negotiate on the city's behalf."
Chastain said the company also provided a human resources specialist who would come in and review the employee handbooks to ensure they were up to date and correct. The sessions are free for city officials to attend.
Chastain said he would once again review the city's line-by-line coverage with City Clerk Debbie Redshaw and have final numbers ready to present to aldermen at their regular May meeting.
|In his report to the board, Police Chief Jackie Lowe reviewed his year-end report for 2011. Calls for service totaled 916, compared to 598 in 2010. Arrests increased to 35 in 2011 compared to 21 in 2010.|
Redshaw swore in newly elected Ward I Alderman Sean Priest.
In other business, aldermen:
* Discussed a property at 209 Business 37 owned by Ron Barnes. The city has a lien against the property, and Barnes notified city officials that no family members were interested in keeping the lot or maintaining it. He volunteered to turn it over to the city.
* Heard from Lowe about property between Jefferson Street and Lori Lane. The parcel is owned by Joe Wynn of Cordova, Tenn., who indicated to Lowe that he is unable to maintain the property and offered use of the property to anyone willing to maintain it.
* Heard from Russ Nichols, building inspector, concerning two vacant trailers on Monroe Street. One is allegedly being torn down, and the other has reportedly been sold.
