The Monett Cubs baseball team couldn't sustain an early 3-1 lead and fell 14-5 to Mt. Vernon to open play in the Carthage Tournament Monday.
The Mountaineers scored a run in the first and watched as the Cubs responded with three runs in the second inning.
Cooper Caldwell walked to open the second frame. Carlin Ballay and Jeff Craft each singled to load the bases. Jordan Hall's sacrifice scored Caldwell. With two outs, Kyle McCallister singled to score Ballay and Craft.
The enjoyment of a lead was short lived for the Cubs as Mt. Vernon plated nine runs in the third inning and three more runs in the seventh inning.
Monett added single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings.
On Tuesday, the Cubs were blanked by Carthage 14-0 in five innings.
Carthage plated a pair of runs in the first and third innings, three runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to secure the victory.
Nick Childress had the lone hit for Monett, a double.
"We just need to keep working to get better," said Uhl. "The more games we play, the more chances we have to improve.
Monett fell to 1-7 on the season.
The Cubs play Thursday night against Lamar in Carthage. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
