The Monett Cubs baseball team's start to the baseball season has been anything but smooth.
The Cubs fell 11-1 to McDonald County on Saturday.
"We made some beginning-of-the-season mistakes against the Mustangs," said Calhoun. "The mistakes are correctable, and I am confident that we will improve throughout the season. We are young and inexperienced but have good attitudes and are coachable. I am looking forward to our improvement as the season continues."
On Monday, the Cubs fell 3-1 to Springfield Catholic.
Monett jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Cooper Caldwell led off the inning with a strikeout but advanced to first on a dropped third strike by the Irish catcher. Kyle McCallister then sacrificed to move Caldwell to third, and Jarred Witt scored Caldwell on a groundout to second.
Catholic responded with a run in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning to record the victory.
"Nick Childress did an exceptional job for us on the mound, throwing a complete game," said Calhoun "He was dueling against Austin Tribby, a returning first team All-State pitcher who has already signed with Mizzou. I was proud of Nick's effort."
The Cubs open play in the Monett Tournament on Friday against Purdy. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
